Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has announced his intention to propose legislation for a fixed work calendar, advocating for “eight-hour workday and five-day workweek” for all workplaces in India. The proposal comes after an emotional conversation with Sibi Joseph, the father of Anna Sebastian, who passed away following work-related stress and gruelling work hours at Ernst and Young (EY). On September 20, Tharoor, in a tweet on X, wrote, “He suggested, and I agreed, that I raise the issue of legislating, through Parliament, a fixed calendar for all workplaces, whether in the private sector or the public, that would not exceed eight hours a day, five days a week.” He argued that inhumane work environments must be eradicated through strict laws and penalties for violators. “Human rights do not stop at the workplace!” Tharoor declared, vowing to address this critical issue in the upcoming parliamentary session.
