The local police said the deceased boy has been identified as Sagar Budha Barela, whose family had temporarily migrated to Ahmednagar from the Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh and is employed by a sugarcane-cutting contractor.
Ahmednagar police officials said the boy fell into the borewell at around 4 pm on a sugarcane field owned by local farmer Kakasaheb Sudrik in the Kopardi village of Karjat taluka of the district. Officials said the boy was stuck at a depth of around 20 feet in the borewell.
After receiving information, rescue teams from the fire brigade and district disaster response wing in Ahmednagar were pressed into action. Considering the critical nature of the rescue operation and the requirement of specialised tools, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was called and they launched a rescue operation.
A team of the 5th Battalion, which was already stationed in Ahmednagar for a community outreach programme, moved in after receiving a call about the incident from the district administration.
“Around 3 am, the rescuers took out the boy. An initial examination found that he was unresponsive. Efforts were made to revive him. He was subsequently pronounced dead,” said an officer from Ahmednagar police.
