12 injured in Pune as bus veers off Mumbai-Bengaluru highway, falls 15 feet

As many as 12 passengers on a private bus were injured in Pune Saturday night when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it skidded 15 feet down from the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway before landing on the service road in Bavdhan.

Officials said the 36 people on the bus, including the driver and helper, were on their way to Bengaluru from Mumbai. Around 11 pm, when the bus was passing the CNG filling station in Bavdhan, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road before falling on its side.

Fire brigade personnel were soon called to the accident spot to rescue the trapped passengers. Fire Officer Shivaji Memane said, “Of the 36 persons onboard, 12 sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. They were rushed to three hospitals. A crane was called to the spot to ensure that no passengers or passersby were trapped underneath it. Fortunately, there was no one. The bus was subsequently removed from the spot and the service road was cleared for traffic.”

Officials said the injured were being treated at Sassoon General Hospital, Chellaram Hospital and Symbiosis Hospital, Lavale.
