Hundreds of people have been evacuated from Spain as a new record temperature of 47.4C was recorded and wildfires rage in the country.
Forest fires sparked by the heatwave across southern Europe have also seen also parts of Greece, Turkey and Italy in flames over the past week.
Firefighters have been fighting blazes in central province of Ávila, Castile and León, and Azuébar, Valencia, which erupted after several days of oppressive heat.
The fierce temperatures were confirmed when Spain’s sweltering heat reached a new record of 47.4C on Saturday according to the Spanish Met Service- which is a new record for the country.
Rescue efforts are ongoing in the central province of Avila, where almost 200 firefighters are tackling two separate fires.

Villages in Avila were evacuated as the flaming curtain destroyed 12,400 acres of forest and showed no signs of stopping.
More than 500 people taken to a sports facility as the fight continued to save their homes,
Jesus Martin, the mayor of Solosancho, one of the villages hit by the blaze said: “Our mountains have been burned. It’s a horrible sensation. Everything is black.”

In the country’s eastern Valencia region, a thunderstorm triggered a fire and forced the evacuation of around 300 villagers in Azuebar.
Pedro Sanche, the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez empathised with villagers’ plight on social media site Twitter.
He said: “Solidarity to the evacuated residents, I can imagine their pain and worry.”

Horrendous images from Spain’s Military Emergencies Unit showed roaring infernos blazing as firefighters desperately tried to tackle them.
Photos at Navalacruz show enormous fires tearing through fields as fire crews try to control the spread at old, traditional style buildings.
A local forestry group said on social media that more than 500 firefighters were involved in tackling the devastating fires.
While the number of cities on red alert in Italy rose to 16, with soaring temperatures expected rise above 43C in the Sicilian cities of Palermo and Catania.
Extreme weather including floods have killed 58 people and devastated the Turkey’s Black Sea region.
Water torrents took over the Kastamonu district as firefighters brought wildfires raging through southern regions under control.
