SRINAGAR: J&K Police on Monday suspended one of its personnel in connection with the death of a 21-year-old man who had been detained for questioning in a theft case in Srinagar’s Natipora area on Saturday. The suspension came after the man’s kin alleged foul play in his death. A probe has been initiated into the claims.
The suspect, Muslim Muneer, was called to Nowgam PS over his involvement in the theft of a scooty, a police spokesperson said in a statement. He was rounded up based on CCTV footage wherein two men were seen taking away the two-wheeler in Nowgam-Natipora area.
As the suspect seemed under the influence of drugs at the time of reporting at the Nowgam PS for examination in the case, his family was called to the station. His kin also confirmed that he abuses drugs habitually, the spokesperson said. “Considering these facts, within a couple of hours on the same afternoon, he was handed over to his family members after all legal formalities. It later came to the fore that he died the same evening around 5pm,” said the spokesperson.
“As soon as the news was received, inquest proceedings were started at Chanpura PS under Section 174 of the CrPC to find out the reason behind the death. The postmortem report is awaited,” the spokesperson added.
