The Kerala High Court recently cautioned parents against the rising “trend” of taking small, tender-age children to protests and agitations merely to grab the attention of authorities. The high court bench of Justice PV Kunhikrishnan said such actions often expose the young to extreme temperatures, loud noises, crowds, and conflicts, causing them emotional trauma. The state’s top court further said that the police can take action against such parents in case of “wilful neglect”. “If the law enforcing authority finds that the children are taken for protest, satyagraha, dharna etc at their tender age and if the intention is to attract attention to their protest, they have every right to proceed in accordance with the law,” the court stated. The high court made the observations while hearing a plea by the parents of a three-year-old child, against whom the police had registered an FIR. The parents approached the High Court seeking quashing of the proceedings.
