Cash haul: Bengal CID raids premises of arrested J’khand Congress MLAs

Separate teams of crime investigation department (CID) of West Bengal on Monday conducted searches at official residences of two suspended Congress legislators, Irfan Ansari and Rajesh Kachhap, in Ranchi, besides their respective paternal residences and some other locations, officials said.

“Raids have been conducted at some locations in Jharkhand, including residences of MLAs,” a CID official said, refusing to share further details.

On July 30, the West Bengal police had recovered 49 lakh on outskirts of Howrah from a vehicle occupied by three Congress legislators Ansari, Kachhap and Naman Video Kongari.

The three were arrested on July 31 after Congress legislator Anup Singh filed a police complaint alleging they were part of a conspiracy to topple the Hemant Soren goverment in Jharkhand. The case was transferred to CID, which got 10-day remand of the three legislators on August 1.

Besides the official residences of Ansari and Kachhap, CID teams also searched their residences at Jamtara and Ulihatu, respectively.

In Ranchi, local police from Jagarnathpur police station were stationed at the residence of the legislators, keeping outsiders, including media personnel, away.

CID records statement of complainant Congress MLA

Meanwhile, the West Bengal CID recorded the statements of Jharkhand Congress legislator Kumar Jaimangal at the agency’s headquarters in Kolkata on Monday.

“I had informed the Ranchi police that attempts were being made to destabilise the Hemant Soren government by purchasing our legislators. We were trying to set things right so that some persons do not commit mistakes. But when they committed the mistake, it was my responsibility, as a citizen of India, to inform the suitable investigating agency. They worked on my information and many things surfaced,” Jaimangal told reporters in Kolkata.

Asked who was the conspirator, he said: “I don’t know who all are there behind this conspiracy. Whatever I came to know through legislators I stated in the FIR. It is up to the CID to find out.”

Officials said that Jaimangal came to Bhabani Bhavan, the CID’s headquarters, around 2 pm and recorded his statements for over two hours.
