NEW DELHI: Out of over 1. 4 lakh public transport buses running across the country, a little over 42,000 (29%) have been made partially accessible, and just 8,695 (6%) were said to be fully accessible for the disabled as of September 30, 2022.
As per targets set under the Accessible India Campaign (AIC), 25% of government-owned public transport carriers in the country were to be converted into fully accessible carriers by June 2022 but now that deadline stands further extended till March 2024.
The information is part of a report of the parliamentary standing committee on social justice and empowerment that was tabled in the ongoing Parliament session. Accessible India Campaign was launched in December 2015 by the Centre to achieve universal accessibility for persons with disabilities in built environment (buildings) transport system and information and communication technology ecosystem.
The timeline of June 2022 for achieving the targets under AIC was revised to March 2024.
According to the report, as per information as of September 30 2022, all 1,100 identified central government buildings in keeping with the targets have been made accessible. But data from states reflect that much needs to be done. Of the 1,671 state government buildings being funded by the Centre for being made accessible, work has been completed in just a little over 600.
