A woman was killed and 25 others were injured when a private bus they were travelling in fell into a dry river near Chikhli in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district after breaking the railings on the bridge. The police said the bus carrying 35 passengers was travelling from Jalgaon Jamod in Buldhana to Pune.
The local police added since the Painganga River was dry and the riverbed is shallow at the spot, the impact was minimised. The bus (UP 78 FN4662) had left Jalgaon Jamod at about 10 pm.
“While being near Peth near Chikhli, it fell down from the bridge on the Painganga river prima facie because of the misjudgment of the driver. The bus fell into the river and turned to one side. One elderly woman, identified as Sangita Thakre, died on the spot. Twenty-five others who had received injuries were dispatched to hospitals in Chikhli, Amdapur, and Buldhana,” said Sunil Kadasne, Superintendent of Police, Buldhana.
A woman who received grievous injuries is said to be in a serious condition.
